We are more dependent on digital today than ever before. We carry out many stages online, from meeting our daily needs to training, from providing management to risky business processes. Our digital footprints, that is, our data reflecting our identities, are gaining great importance in parallel with these developments.
In today’s world where remote communication is of vital importance, Zoom has ensured continuity and productivity in areas such as education, health and work with the unique features it offers to its users, while also keeping its platform safe.
So what measures does Zoom take to protect user privacy?
Advanced encryption options
Zoom has made significant changes in its encryption strategy with updates designed to better protect user privacy. Zoom Meetings and Chat, Zoom Video Webinars, Zoom Rooms and Zoom Phone protected with 256-bit AES-GCM encryption standard on May 30, 2020 to increase the security of meetings.
In addition to this advanced encryption method, Zoom protects all data transferred in standard Zoom calls end-to-end with the encryption technology called E2EE, which uses the GCM advanced encryption method. With Zoom’s E2EE protection, meeting hosts generate encryption keys, ensuring attendees are securely involved in the meeting.
Zoom servers act as relays for data transfer, never seeing the encryption key required to decrypt the data.
Special privacy capabilities
Zoom has released a series of updates that improve existing meeting features, such as passwords, waiting rooms, limited screen sharing, user reporting, and suspending participant activities, helping users manage meeting privacy and security. Enhanced data security by supporting existing content with the following new privacy features:
When the host wants to unmute the participant, get confirmation from the participant.
Prevent attendees from joining a meeting on multiple devices at the same time or on a different device when leaving a meeting.
Ability to require only authenticated users to attend meetings.
These features have been added to Zoom for one purpose: protecting users’ privacy while providing the best possible meeting experience.
Compliance to the law
Zoom maintains a policy that emphasizes that it complies with the privacy laws, rules and regulations that apply to its platform and its customers, including the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA).
Aiming to raise awareness of users’ rights, Zoom has taken the necessary measures to ensure its own compliance and developed tools and processes to help its customers meet their compliance obligations.
Taking steps designed to provide its customers with more HIPAA (American Health Sector Information Security Standards) and PIPEDA/PHIPA compliant features to support tele-medicine, which is among the important trends of the healthcare industry, Zoom has taken numerous privacy and security controls to ensure the security of identifiable health information in its environment, which applied, maintained and protected all kinds of video, audio and written data by encrypting them.
Taking virtual or online education to a new level, Zoom has made updates that comply with educational institutions’ legal responsibilities such as the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Meeting At Risk Tool
Last fall, Zoom unveiled its “Meeting At Risk Notification Tool” designed to proactively identify meeting privacy issues. The tool has the ability to scan posts on public social media sites and other public sources to detect Zoom Meeting links.
When the tool, also referred to as the At-Risk Meeting Notifier, identifies publicly shared meeting information that indicates that a particular meeting could potentially be interrupted, Zoom notifies the relevant account holders and administrators via email and provides the steps necessary to make meetings private.
Zoom has concentrated its efforts to strengthen the safe transfer and storage of valuable information through the platform, enabling its users to have a seamless and secure experience.
Guided by privacy and security, new solutions and updates are always the first agenda item for Zoom; The video communication platform is determined to be a reliable solution point for users’ online interactions, information and business.
