agile methodology in business

Agile is another of the next generation business concepts we heard about recently. So what are the advantages of the agile approach for organizations and its differences from a flexible work culture?

Today, the needs of employees who want to balance daily and business life differ in this context. For example, the 9-6 working system is no longer working and does not satisfy employees, gradually more flexible, agile and remote working models are taking its place.

Although they are flexible and agile in word meaning, they are quite different when it comes to implementation. By the way, I would like to point out that the English equivalent of the word “agile” is used more in business jargon instead of agile. So agile also is one of the areas on which the whole industry, especially the most investment. To simply explain the difference between flexible and agile working; While flexibility means crying about work and life balance, agility means being operationally fast. First of all, the flexible working system, which became official in different countries in the last 5-10 years under the name of flexible working rules, enabled employees to have more control in the balance of work and life.

Agile or agile working is a concept that is all about work. In a project managed as an Agile, research, planning, design, development and testing phases continue simultaneously. This ensures continuous progress in the process. Agile working culture allows all employees to work from different places at different times by integrating technology into the process. In this way, employee productivity and motivation increase, office costs decrease. In this business model, staff can work from home, from a cafe or even from the park.

What are the critical differences?

The main difference between flexible and agile working is practice. While technology is sufficient to implement flexible working, management and employee participation in the process are very important for agile working. Flexible working must be employee-oriented. It is believed that flexible working improves the balance of work and daily life and increases employee happiness. In this way, productivity increases and turnover rates decrease. However, agile working practices benefit both the employee and the company. Employees have the freedom to work wherever and whenever they want, but results are more performance-oriented.

Technology has an important place in both models. Uses similar technologies and tools in flexible and agile working applications. Mobile devices and a wireless quality and fast connection are among the top ones. However, agile work requires a more comprehensive change in IT strategy.
Cloud-based solutions, BI services and VPN technology enable every employee to do their job whenever and wherever they want. Although a flexible working culture supports agile working, agile working requires more.

So how does the application work?

Employer and employee needs are never the same. However, agile work can be helpful in this regard. In many organizations, the main obstacle to agile work is outdated minds or a work culture that is not subject to change. Having the best technology is not enough to build the best workstations. The application has to be done in all units of the business and integrated into the business processes of all departments.

At the same time, there must be concrete arguments for agile work. Basic goals should be defined and how to achieve these goals with agile work should be determined. For example, the PAS 3000 agile working created by the UK Government is a resource that can be taken as an example as a standard.

The results of agile work can be far-reaching. Companies that put 80 percent of their workforce into agile work can achieve 30-40 percent productivity increase in the productivity of their employees. However, work-related, stress-based illnesses are also likely to decrease.
